After obtaining the Bolt Badge, you can visit Route 5 to the west or Route 16 to the east; the latter is covered next, though optional. In the outpost between Route 16 and Nimbasa, talk to the Baseballer to receive a Macho Brace, a hold item that doubles EVs gained. Two version exclusives appear on Route 16: White's Solosis and Black's Gothita. Solosis becomes Reuniclus, a nucleus-based Psychic-type who, like Munna, is decent but very slow overall. Gothita's final evolution is Gothitelle, a gothic humanoid who is similar to (but slightly worse than) Gardevoir in battle worth. Also appearing here are the previously-battled Emolga and Trubbish, although neither is particularly worth catching. Finally, the cute chinchilla-based Minccino and its evolution Cinccino appear here; they have a few decent tricks thanks to their large movepool and abilities, but aren't top-tier battlers.

Continue east along the Route to fight a Policeman with a Herdier and a female Cyclist who uses Ducklett and Liepard. North of the female Cyclist is a male Backpacker, who has a Drilbur, and the tall grass containing the aforementioned Pokemon; note that Audino, Emolga and Cinccino only appear in the special shaking grass. Further north is a Cut tree that's concealing a Rare Candy on the ground. To the northwest of the Backpacker is the entrance to Lostlorn Forest, which is another optional area.

Inside, pick up the Big Mushroom inside of the tree stump and head north. While there is tall grass, only evolved forms of previously-seen Pokemon show up, and the shaking grass Pokemon are similar to the previous Forest's. The main purpose of this area is to find Zoroark, who is using its illusionary powers to take the form of a mute woman in the camper. If you bring one of the event Legendary Beasts, they'll break through her illusion and you can fight a Level 25 female Zoroark. If you have the event Pokemon, save your game before approaching the camper in case you accidentally KO Zoroark.
Zoroark

As Generation V's answer to Lucario, Zoroark is faster and hits harder, but is also more frail and has a worse typing. Zoroark is clearly meant to be a sweeper, but it's also notable for its ability, Illusion, which makes it resemble another Pokemon in the player's team to provide an opportunity to play mind games. At Level 25, Zoroark knows Scary Face, Fury Swipes, Taunt and Pursuit, so the bigger challenge here will be to not accidentally faint the fragile kitsune. Compared to other Dark-types so far, Zoroark is a massive upgrade over Liepard and it's definitely worth catching if you've acquired one of the event Beasts. As a bonus, this Zoroark is always female, allowing easy breeding for additional Zorua and Zoroark.

West of the Cyclist on Route 16, you'll find another male Backpacker, this one using a Scraggy. Behind him is the game's first Strength boulder, which you can move after teaching HM04 to one of your Pokemon and earning the Bolt Badge. Push that huge boulder into the hole and walk through the path, defeating a female Backpacker with a Swadloon, to find TM66 - Payback to her north and a Charcoal to her northeast, behind the fence. Payback is a Physical Dark-type move that doubles in power if the user if hit before attacking, while Charcoal is a Fire-type version of Miracleseed or Soft Sand that you can stick on one of your Fire-types for now. Back on the main road, and west of the Strength boulder, you'll find Route 16's last Trainer before a dead end (for now): a male Cyclist who uses two Whirlipede. Return to Nimbasa City and enter Route 5 through its western outpost.
Route 5 and Driftveil Drawbridge
As soon as you step foot on Route 5, Cheren will come up from behind and challenge you to the eight millionth Rival battle in this game so far.

The only change to Cheren's team since the last time we found him is that his Pidove has evolved into Tranquill, and that's it. As usual, Pignite or other Fighting-types take down Liepard, while Blitzle, Roggenrola or a Pokemon that knows Rock Tomb can take down Tranquill. Otherwise, we've fought both Cheren and Belle enough times already to know how to deal with the other half of this team: Water-, Rock- and Ground-types or their attacks take out Pignite and Pansear; Flying-, Fire- or Bug-type moves take out Servine and Pansage; and Dewott and Panpour fall to Electric- or Grass-types. As usual, Cheren is not hard and will comment about how you've beaten him again.

Elesa will come and bring you both to a man named Alder, who is the current Isshu Champion. After hearing Cheren talk about strength, Alder asks that you and Cheren have a tag match against a couple of Toddlers; Cheren heals your Pokemon before a very easy fight against two Herdier. After you win, Alder will point out that the kids are just happy to have Pokemon, and Cheren will ponder the idea and then proceed left to the bridge. Next, Elesa will get the operators to put down the Driftveil Drawbridge, which leads to the eponymous City. Like the previous bridge, there are no Trainers or wild encounters here, although you'll occasionally see a small shadow appear. If you walk on these, you'll either enter a battle against a wild Ducklett, a Water/Flying-type duck, or acquire a consumable Feather item that gives 1 EV of a particular stat to one Pokemon.

Route 5 has two paths, and its wild Pokemon are the same as Route 16's. On the bottom of the paved path, go behind the fence for a Hyper Potion. Northeast of the camper is a female Backpacker with a Munna, and she's standing near a Great Ball. Far west of her, near a Revive, is a male Backpacker who uses a Palpitoad. Beyond him is a Zinc, which gives 10 Special Defense EVs to one Pokemon. On the paved path, a hungry woman in of the trailer asks for food (Berries, drinks, Mushrooms, Rare Candy and Casteliacone), offering prices that are slightly higher than what Pokemarts would offer. Outside, you can battle a Baker with the three monkeys (and apparently no food for the woman inside!); a Clown using two Whirlipede; a Musician with two Blitzle who gives you an Electric Guitar accessory after winning; a Dancer with two Darumaka; and an Artist who has a Sigilyph. Go to Driftveil City.
Driftveil City

Upen entering Driftveil City, head west and you'll find Cheren talking to a man on a bridge. The man, who is Driftveil City's Gym Leader Clay, will note that some Team Plasma Grunts are hiding in town, and he won't accept challenges until you go and deal with them. Before finding the Plasma Grunts, there's a few things to do in town. In the second house after the bridge, you'll find a move tutor who teaches Grass Pledge, Fire Pledge or Water Pledge to your Starter of the respective typing; while these moves are mediocre on their own, they can combine with each other in tag matches to create combo attacks, although they are sadly the only three moves that work like this. Next door is a large market but, before entering, you can also fight your first Triple Battle (in White) or Rotation Battle (in Black) against the Biker nearby; he has a Basculin, Krokorok and Zebstrika, and can be a little tricky in Black if you're not familiar with the mechanics of Rotation Battles. Just know that you can use the buttons under your Pokemon's moves to adjust your team's lineup without using a turn.
In the market, the guy at the lower register sells bitter healing items, which are inexpensive but greatly lower your Pokemon's happiness. If you have a Pokemon with you that is over Level 30, the man in black will give you an Expert Belt, which provides a 20% buff to the holder's Super Effective attacks to opponents. The lady in the corner sells a decent recovery item, Moo Moo Milk, either singularly or by the dozen. There's also a hidden Heart Scale immediately southeast of the blonde girl near the entrance, and you can earn one more per day in the house to the north by showing the woman a Pokemon that knows the attack she wants. Also, since the market has four entrances, you can use the west entrance (behind the Biker) to find a Big Pearl, which you can sell for money.

Two houses across from the market's east entrance, a man will give you a Shell Bell if you've seen more than 50 Pokemon. This recovers some health to the holder based on the damage the holder inflicts on an opponent. The boy next to him will offer to trade you his Basculin, that fish Pokemon with two forms that you haven't been able to capture yourself yet, for a Minccino. Basculin is nothing special compared to either Oshawott or Panpour's evolutions, but it's not horrible in-game if you like the design. At the Pokemon Center in the north, a girl on the upper level will give you three Repeat Balls, which are more effective against Pokemon that you've already caught before. In the northwest tip of the city, just before Route 6, you can also find an Ultra Ball on a small path behind some trees. To resume the storyline, head south from the market and you'll enter the Cold Storage, just south of the City.

Although directly south of Driftveil City, the game considers the Cold Storage to be a separate area, with its own Trainers and tall grass. Head east and you'll fight two Youngsters in a dead end: one uses Whirlipede and the new Bug-type Karrablast, while the other has the new Bug/Electric-type Joltik and a Dwebble. Just below the first Youngster is a Worker who will give you a Rugged Helmet; when a direct contact move hits the user of this item, the attacker receives damage to 1/8 of its max HP, so it's a handy in-game item. Continue south from the bridge to find another vending machine that sells drinks and a waste basket that has a hidden PP Up. In the grass, the only new Pokemon is Vanillite, the game's first Ice-type. As a pure Ice-type, it's not very useful defensively, but its STAB attacks and its line's good Special Attack may prove useful throughout the game.
In the tall grass, you can go immediately east to find an Ether in plain sight. Further down this path is the third and final Trainer of the area, a Worker who uses a Pansage and a Timburr, along with some Double Battle tall grass containing a Protein and the same Pokemon as before. There's also a hidden Dive Ball just left of the singular patch of grass along the bottom of the path. Return to the vending machine and head southwest until Cheren approaches; he'll wonder if Team Plasma is inside and then wait patiently for you to go in together. Before doing that, check the path of tall grass to the left of the building to find a Heart Scale and then go inside.
Cold Storage (Inside)

Cheren will enter the Cold Storage with you, pondering Alder's earlier words before you're allowed to move again. There are no wild encounters in this freezer, but there are some Trainers along the way. Climb the ladder in front of you to find a Net Ball, which is more successful against Water- and Bug-type Pokemon, before finding a dead-end ice path similar to ice paths in previous Pokemon games. Go back downstairs to find another sheet of ice. Before crossing, slide over the left-most tile of the ice, and then to the right to find TM55 - Scald. This is a Special Water-type move with 80 Power and a 30% chance to burn its target, so you'll definitely want to teach it to your Water-types immediately. Cross the patch of ice this time and you'll find a Worker who uses Pansear and Timburr. Slide across the ice to his right.
You can't navigate across this sheet of ice in any other way right now, so just climb the ladder and fight the Worker, who has an elemental monkey (Panpour, in this case) and Timburr, like his companions. After him is another path of ice blocks, which you can easily navigate by sliding right, up, left and then down. Ascend another staircase to find the next Worker here, who only owns Timburr's evolution Gurdurr, and then follow the path down to find an Ice Heal beyond a Worker who uses Vanillite and Timburr. You'll find the ice path you crossed earlier, so slide all the way north to fight the Freezer's final Worker, this one using two Timburr and a Vanillite, along with a Hyper Potion behind him. Continue left and Cheren will walk up, pointing out that the nearby container is the only place you've yet to look for the Plasma Grunts.

Head into the container and you'll find a group of eight Team Plasma Grunts here, along with their current leader Vio, who is another one of the Seven Sages of Team Plasma. Vio sends his underlings to fight you, at which point you'll have battles against the four Grunts on the right. These are, from left to right, a male who has a Watchog and Scraggy, a female who has a Liepard, a female who uses a Trubbish, and a second male with a Sandile and a Watchog, all while Cheren fights the other four Grunts, despite never actually moving. None of them are very hard, especially since you can save and heal between each fight. After the fights, Clay will bust into the container and have his Workers drag Vio and the Grunts off, also agreeing to fight you back at his Gym for helping. Grab the Nevermeltice on the ground before leaving this room, as this is the Ice-type version of the Miracleseed, and then climb the ladder and take a shortcut through the ice path near the entrance to leave.
Driftveil City Gym

The Driftveil City Gym is just northeast of the Pokemon Center and, as you enter, you'll find Ghetsis and Vio confronting Clay about their cause to free Pokemon from Trainers and their purpsoe in Driftveil City. They'll leave and Clay will agree to fight you for a Badge, so go inside after this. As always, you can speak to the Pokemon Scout to receive a free Fresh Water and some hints about Clay's type, which is Ground. Driftveil's Gym has you navigate through a series of lifts to reach Clay, using the red, left arrows to go up and the green, right arrows to go down. Descend from the ground floor, fighting a Miner who has a Palpitoad and a Drilbur, to reach the button to take his lift down. Optionally, you can head up the north lift to fight a Miner with a Sandile and another Drilbur; otherwise, head across it and navigate the catwalk to fight a Miner who owns a Krokorok. Go down the platform here.
When the lift lands, there will be two additional elevators on this level. If you'd like to fight another optional Trainer, take the right elevator and fight the Businessman who uses two Sandile and a Palpitoad; otherwise, head up the top lift and go east. You'll fight the Gym's last underling, an Office Lady who only has a Drilbur, before reaching the final platform of the Gym, which was blocked off by a traffic cone on the other side. Take it down, through a mine with walls decorated with fossil bones, to reach Clay, the Driftveil City Gym Leader.

Clay is not too difficult, as his Pokemon are pretty slow. However, to make up for this, Clay has taught Bulldoze, a Physical Ground-type variation of Icy Wind that lowers your Pokemon's Speed, to all of his party members. He leads with Krokorok, the evolved form of Sandile, who has decent Attack and two Physical STAB moves in Crunch and Bulldoze. It also has tricks like Swagger to confuse you and Torment to force you to switch up your moves. Tympole's evolved form, Palpitoad, is a slow Water/Ground-type that has Aqua Ring to restore health and Bubblebeam, Muddy Water and Bulldoze for Physical and Special attacks from both of its STAB types. Finally, Clay's Excadrill is his main Pokemon, a powerful Ground/Steel-type with decent Speed and great Attack who packs Hone Claws to boost his Attack and the Accuracy of Slash, Bulldoze and Rock Slide, which counters Flying-types.
While all of this sounds good on paper for Clay, you should have the TMs for both Grass Knot and Scald at this point. If you teach either of these moves to Snivy, Pansage, Oshawott, Panpour or their evolutions, they can likely destroy all of Clay's Pokemon in one hit, since Scald has good Power while Grass Knot hits Palpitoad for 4x damage, although Scald is better against Excadrill. Pokabu players lacking Grass- or Water-types are not totally at a loss here, as Arm Thrust can wreck both Krokorok and Excadrill's secondary types, and the Fighting-type negates your weakness against Rock Slide, although you'll probably need another Pokemon against Palpitoad. Any Flying-type Pokemon up to this point are also good as long as you watch out for Excadrill's Rock Slide, as well as any additional weaknesses from your flyer's second type. Keep Blitzle out of this fight, however.
When you defeat Clay, you'll receive $3720 and the Quake Badge, which makes all Pokemon up to Level 60 obey you and allows you to use HM02 - Fly on the overworld to instantly transport to any area that you've previously visited. You also would have received TM78 - Bulldoze, a Physical Ground-type attack that has mediocre Power but lowers the target's Speed by one stage, but Clay notes that he forgot the TM out on Route 6 and will tell you go find it there.
